Parents

By signing below, you make no commitment other than to give your permission for your son/daughter to be considered for the Expedition. The project is expected to be over-subscribed and places will be limited. Selection will be, as usual, by letter and interview.

Once selected, full commitment will be required to the Ghana 2019 Expedition and the £100 non-refundable deposit due.  Dates will be given as soon as the respective educational authorities publish their holiday dates for 2019. Final costs can only be published when the airlines have published their air fares for 2019, which will be in the summer of 2018.

Destination

The Expedition is to Hohoe, Ghana, a growing town in the Volta region, midway between the Togo border and Lake Volta. Hohoe sits on the Greenwich meridian and is only 7 degrees north of the equator; itís about a 4 hour drive inland from the coastal airport at Accra. Hohoe is warm, humid and attractive. The Ghanaians are very welcoming and speak English. A previous expedition built the Scout Headquarters at Hohoe and this is where the 2019 expedition will be based.

Purpose of the Expedition

We will be building a playground at the Volta School for the Deaf in Hohoe, working with Ghanaian Scouts.  The school currently has 300 deaf students and 3 blind and deaf students.  UK Scouts worked at the school in 2011 and Scout Leaders worked there in 2016

Organisation

We will be camping at the Municipal Scout Campsite in Hohoe. Cooking will be done at the site on open fires and gas rings.

Medical Matters

Dr. Russell Lees, Scout Leader, is our expedition medic. You will need a few vaccinations; for instance, Yellow Fever is compulsory as no one is allowed into Ghana without this. Russell will contact all Expedition members re medical matters.

Timing and Cost

Exact dates are not determined yet but we will be going mid July 2019 for a maximum of 3 weeks.

Guide cost is £3,000 and there will be a non returnable deposit of £100. You will be expected to fund raise to support your expedition costs.
